The Moonee Valley Cup was inaugurated onto the Australian horseracing calendar in 1883 as a Principal race over eight furlongs and saw Castaway claim the maiden honours. The race increased in distance over the years, and in 1973 converted to the metric system to become a 2600 metre event, and decreased to 2500 metres in 1995. The Moonee Valley Cup was a Group Three race for just a single year – 1979 – elevated to Group Two in 1980.
Over the course of its history, the Moonee Valley Cup has been known by several names including the Governors Stakes, the Grosby Gold Cup, the Grosby Moonee Valley Cup and the Cathay Pacific Gold Cup.
