2013 Moonee Valley Gold Cup – Race Preview

The Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup is scheduled to run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday October 26, 2013.

The race takes place over a distance of 2,500 metres and is worth $250,000 in prize money.

The 2013 Moonee Valley Gold Cup is run under set weight plus penalty conditions and is open to horses aged four-years-old and upwards.

Scheduled as part of Cox Plate Day, the race shares its program with the Group 1 Cox Plate, Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase, Group 2 Crystal Mile, Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes and the Group 3 Terio Stakes.

Last year’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup was won by Vatuvei.

Vatuvei won the race by one and a half lengths ahead of Ironstein, who finished second, and Rueben Percival, who rounded out the placings in third position.

The five-year-old gelding went on to place 10th in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in his next start.

Prior to his Moonee Valley Gold Cup win, Vatuvei placed eighth in the Listed Cranbourne Cup behind Midnight Martini.

The Reset gelding has won three of his 24 race starts ad has earned more than $362,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

Vatuvei is now ready to return in time for this year’s spring racing carnival and possibly another tilt at the 2013 Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
