Sangster to Target 2014 Moonee Valley Gold Cup

July 15th, 2014

Having not appeared on course since a disappointing run for sixteenth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 5th last year, rising six-year-old Sangster has been confirmed for a return to Australia for a 2014 Spring Racing Carnival geared towards the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) on October 26th.

Set for the 2013 edition of the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Sangster displayed a clear dislike for the firm ground during the running of the Turnbull Stakes and was instead immediately sent back to New Zealand and the spelling paddock.

Unable to take part in the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival as a result of foot issues sustained off the track, co-trainer Natalie Young said the team could not be happier with the Savabeel gelding in the lead-up to the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, who will first contest the Group 1 Spring Classic (2040m) at Hawkes Bay before crossing the ditch for another tilt at major Australian events, including the Moonee Valley Cup.

“He looks fantastic and we’re really happy with him,” Young told the New Zealand Racing Desk.

“We were battling with his feet last time in, but they are really good now.

“He’s done three weeks’ work and we could look at the Spring Classic here and then go over for races like the Moonee Valley Cup and the Sandown (Zipping) Classic.”

Claiming a total of six race wins and as many minor places from 25 competitive starts so far, Sangster performed particularly well over the autumn of 2013; winning all of the Group 1 International Stakes (2000m), Group 2 Avondale Gold Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) before crossing the ditch to finish third in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) most notably.

Unable to make an impression over two early starts through the New Zealand spring, the gelding out of Quinta Special ran sixth in the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) prior to his ill-fated tilt at the Turnbull Stakes.
