October 24th, 2014

Running on to finish a credible third in the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) last time out on October 12th, trainer Tony McEvoy is confident Le Roi is in the right form to return to the winner’s circle in Saturday’s Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m).

Securing six wins and three minor places from his fifteen competitive starts so far, Le Roi has secured several impressive results over a total of six appearances this year and appears to have completely overcome a strong of minor upsets at the beginning of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Pleased with the form and work completed by the Areion gelding in the lead-up to the Moonee Valley Cup, McEvoy told AAP his is confident of a successful tilt for Le Roi this weekend following the strong Cranbourne Cup performance.

“He looked the winner and then his condition just gave out,” McEvoy said.

“I’m really expecting him to run very well.”

Initially underlining the Melbourne Cup as the major target this time in, McEvoy said weather has not permitted an ideal lead-in to the Race That Stops a Nation and is therefore no longer on the radar.

“He hasn’t quite had the preparation for a Melbourne Cup for me,” McEvoy said.

“We had setbacks with him early doors and then got held up with rain.

“In my planning I did have the Melbourne Cup in mind but the Moonee Valley Cup was going to be his fourth run, not his third.

“So we’re not going to get there.”

Running third in the Listed Memorial Cup (1600m) first-up this year of March 10th, Le Roi charged home to secure an impressive race win the Silver Thomas Hanley Handicap (1600m) on March 29th, but was sufficiently outclassed when ninth in the featured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 9th; returning to the paddock after finishing sixth in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup (2500m).

Finishing fifth in the Caulfield RSL Welfare Plate (1700m) in his only other start prior to the Cranbourne Cup, Le Roi is currently available at generous odds of $7 for success in the Moonee Valley Cup with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
